This Christmas we will be hosting three consecutive evening lectures which form part of our very popular Lovell Lecture series.
We are delighted to have Dr Lucie Green who will be giving a talk on Solar Max.
There is more to our Sun than meets the eye. Observations from spacecraft have, over the last 50 years, revealed astonishing activity that cannot be seen from the Earth. The level of activity follows a cycle and the current cycle has been predicted to peak in 2013. This talk will discuss where we are in the solar cycle and whether the Sun has indeed reached the maximum in its cycle. It will also show you the science behind the activity including how eruptions of magnetic field from the Sun’s atmosphere can drive catastrophic failures of technology that we take for granted at Earth.
Lucie is one of the core team on Sky at Night and regularly appears on BBC Stargazing Live!
