Exploding Women Event

Aiming to bring together different communities and audiences, Manchester Histories in collaboration with comedy duo LipService, explode the myth of women in science, exploring the lives of five of Manchester’s most influential female scientists. Set up in an ‘out of the ordinary’ venue (a University laboratory), the event reveals the achievements and impact on society of Kathleen Drew - Mother of the Sea, Dame Kathleen Ollerenshaw – Rubik’s cube expert and maths genius who was Deaf from aged 8, Caroline Birley - fossil hunter, Marie Stopes - palaeobotanist and Dame Margaret Beckett – metallurgist.

“It’s very rare that members of the public get to see inside the teaching laboratories, which will hopefully add to the ambience of the performance. The staff in my team are busy thinking of interesting exhibits and curiosities that can be put out in the lab for the audience to interact with before the show and we are looking forward to an entertaining performance from LipService. We are delighted to welcome both the performers and audience members into one of our laboratories for this unique event”. (Hayley Monk, Senior Technical -Operations Manager)

Goggles on and pipettes prepared for a bumper Bunsen burner of a performance, which will make you explode with laughter. Please note the performance is also BSL interpreted.

The event takes place on Thursday 2 March from 5.30 - 7pm in the 1SUGT Annexe, Stopford Building as part of Wonder Women.

Wonder Women, Manchester’s annual feminist festival. From 2-12 March 2017, we celebrate the women’s movement born in our city through a radical programme of cultural events, asking how far we’ve come in 100 years – and how far we have yet to go. creativetourist.com/wonderwomen
