‘Everything is Connected’
One of the central assumptions of conspiracy theories is that ‘everything is connected’. Conspiracy narratives often weave together many different strands into one vast interconnected plot, with an evil mastermind behind scenes pulling the strings. But what happens to the hierarchies of power imagined by conspiracy theory in the age of decentred networks? This lecture will explore visual representations of conspiratorial causality and connectedness in American culture, ranging from the Pujo Committee’s analysis of J. P. Morgan’s financial empire in 1913, to the string-and-drawing-pin walls beloved by conspiracy obsessives in Hollywood thrillers.
