Calling all PhD students! We are delighted to host a visit by Sir Alan Wilson of the Alan Turing Institute on 23 October 2018. Sir Alan will be giving insights into the importance of inter-disciplinary research based on his experiences of working in the social and physical sciences.

Abstract:
How many good research ideas come from being able to trawl across a wide range of reading, studying and recombining of sources? Quite a lot according to eminent scholar and geographer
Sir Alan Wilson. Drawing on the experience from his own long career in working across the physical and social sciences he will explain why researchers of all ages, but particularly those starting out in their careers, need to keep in mind the value of inter-disciplinary research. Using the idea of ‘combinatorial evolution’ from the work of Brian Arthur and Ross Ashby’s ‘Design for a brain’ he will show how scholarly innovation and discovery often emerges from unexpected sources; and building blocks at the basis of many breakthroughs in science come through venturing into and working with other disciplines.
