This event blends storytelling, archive exploration, and a discussion-stimulating game as you aim to influence your own fictional financial investment. Part of the Being Human Festival, the activity is inspired by the research of Dr Edmond Smith, historian of economic cultures, capitalism and globalisation, and will draw on links to The Entrepreneurs Network (TEN), IPPR North, and Alliance Manchester Business School - all significantly involved in the event.
The John Rylands Research Institute and Library Historic Reading Room is where you will scrutinise a range of media sources, from historical newspapers and business accounts to 19th century tech enthusiasts' personal diaries. To assist with your choices, you can question and engage with a range of specialists including historians, economists, and curators.
Please note that engaging with 19th century economics in Manchester involves examining the transatlantic slave trade structures underpinning British capital.
