Title: Euler characteristics and groups
Abstract: Starting from a poset, meaning a partially ordered set, we may view it as a simplicial complex. This opens the door to such concepts as the Euler characteristic of the poset. Given a group G, we may take a collection of subgroups of G and regard them as the elements of a poset with the partial order being set-wise containment. A famous result here is Brown’s, so-called, Homological Sylow Theorem. This talk will investigate the Euler characteristic of certain posets related to groups, with Brown’s theorem appearing as a special case.
