CIDRAL Key Ideas Seminar: Islam and the Diversity of Gender and Sexuality
As a queer French Muslim who is trained in cognitive sciences, social psychology, anthropology, and also a qualified Imam, Dr. Ludovic-Mohamed Zahed is particularly well placed to analyse the contemporary, socio-political situation of LGBT Muslims as well as the question of gender and sexuality in the Islamic tradition. Trained in Algeria in Qur’anic exegesis (tafsir al-Qur'an) and Islamic orthopraxy (usul al-fiqh), Dr. Zahed holds a master’s degree from the Ecole Normale Supérieure de Paris (ENS) and a doctorate from the Ecole des Hautes Etudes en Sciences Sociales (EHESS). He is the author of numerous books, scholarly articles, and newspaper op-eds. He currently the rector of the Calem Institute in Marseille, France. He will be speaking about his book, Homosexuality, Transidentity and Islam: A Study of Scripture Confronting the Politics of Gender and Sexuality (Amsterdam University Press, 2019).
