Why Sarah Fielden?
The Manchester Institute of Education is recognised internationally as a leading centre of educational research. Education at the University of Manchester has a proud history dating back to the late 19th century.
The University appointed its first professor of education, Harry Livingston Withers, in 1899 using benefaction from the philanthropist Sarah Fielden. This began a tradition that has continued to this day, with Helen Gunter our current Sarah Fielden Professor. Naming this seminar series after Sarah recognises her ongoing influence and honours her legacy.
