Although the topic of ethics has received considerable attention from academics working in Translation and Interpreting Studies, questions about the ‘what’ and the ‘how’ of teaching ethics have received only limited critical attention in the field. This presentation, based on my recent publication, The Routledge Guide to Teaching Ethics in Translation and Interpreting Education (2024), seeks to open up debate about the ways in which educators prepare students to navigate the ethical challenges facing translators and interpreters in the contemporary age, and how pedagogical practice can and should evolve to meaningfully respond to the needs of an increasingly diverse student body.
I will discuss some of the challenges I encountered in scoping a publication on this topic before offering some reflections on selected themes, namely, the relationship between ethics and competence in translation and interpreting education, the potential of different pedagogical theories for developing ethics education, and my proposal for an integrated approach. The presentation will be of interest to both students and educators in translation, interpreting, intercultural communication and language learning.
