Join us at the John Rylands Research Institute and Library for this unique event. The Library will be hosting a live printing of the Tanya, a Jewish philosophical text. The tradition of printing the book in as many locations began in 1979, since then more than 8,000 editions have been printed, with thousands of people touched by the wide-reaching and never-ending endeavour. While the Tanya has been printed in various towns in and around Manchester, this will be the first time a Tanya has been printed at the university. Along side the printing we'll be showing some of our most interesting and fascinating Hebrew manuscripts from the extraordinary Gaster collection held at the Library. The event is free so drop in to discover more about our collections and to join the Tanya printing tradition.
Tanya, the magnum opus of the founder of Chabad-Lubavitch Chasidism, is indispensable to understanding the philosophy of the Chasidic movement and the essence of the Jewish soul. It unifies Kabbalah and Talmud to explain the "mechanics" of Creation, the infinitude of G-d, and the structure of the human personality.
For a period of more than twenty years, the author, Rabbi Schneur Zalman of Liadi (1745-1812), refined its style and form so punctiliously that meaning can be found in every word and letter.
In 1796, in Slavita, Rabbi Schneur Zalman published the first Tanya, which was to become known as the 'written Torah of Chassidism', revolutionising Jewish thought forever.
In 1984, the seventh Lubavitcher Rebbe, Rabbi Menachem Mendel Schneerson (1902-1994) began a campaign to print an edition of Tanya in every city in the world. To date, more than 8,000 editions have been printed.
