This exhibition presents a dynamic selection of contemporary sculpture recently acquired by the Whitworth.
Spanning the last 25 years, the exhibition offers an eclectic journey through recent sculpture-making, delving into classical literature, comedy and new ideas of material culture along the way.
Works by leading contemporary artists such as Sara Barker, Brian Griffiths, Roger Hiorns, Michael Landy and Helen Marten, are shown alongside the late Carl Plackman, an influential teacher and pioneer of British Conceptual sculpture in the 1970s.
Each work has entered our collection either through private donations made by patrons, which tell personal stories between collector and artist, or by the generous support of philanthropic organisations such as Contemporary Art Society. Together, they enable the Whitworth to expand its research and discussion of contemporary artistic practice.
