Inaugural Lecture, Serena Chair of Italian
The lecture will look at Manchester’s civic heritage and the importance of sustaining the vital relation between cities and learning which places the humanities at the centre of our understanding of the cultures which shape and surround us.
It will examine Enriqueta Rylands’ purchasing of Dante editions for the Rylands Library and the foundation in 1906 of the Manchester Dante Society, an organization whose first meeting in the Whitworth Hall was attended by over 450 individuals.
Drawing on the recently discovered archives of this society, Professor Milner will look at its activities and how its membership represented religious, lay, and educational groups engaged with the city.
