Cláudia Regina Plens (archaeologist, Federal University of São Paulo) will present the preliminary results of the research “State Violence in Brazil: A Study of Crimes of May 2006 in the Perspective of the Transitional Justice and Forensic Anthropology” a project in collaboration with the University of Oxford and supported by the Newton Fund. The overall goal of the project is to consolidate the area of Forensic Anthropology from the perspective of Human Rights in Brazil. This initiative is part of Transitional Justice actions that have been carried out slowly in the country, over thirty years since the end of the military dictatorship (1964-1985). A culture of impunity is responsible for the perpetuation of the authoritarian past and has serious consequences in terms of police violence and the disrespect for human rights. This research will lead to a set of protocols that can be implemented by the state in order to improve Brazilian democracy in the perspective of Transitional Justice and Forensic Anthropology.
