This event is open to school and/or college students (students under the age of 18). So far we have approx. 75 students who are studying Politics, Economics and Sociology taking part in the event from Winstanley College, Withington Girls’ School and Xaverian College.

The aims of this event are to:

  • showcase to students how social science statistics and numbers can create a picture of the varied aspects of inequality
  • help students understand how quantitative skills can help them develop informed arguments about inequality from a wide range of social science perspectives (politics, social anthropology and sociology)
  • help students see the value of quantitative methods across the social sciences and support students in making informed decisions about future career choices.

Speakers on the day include: Dr Jackie Carter (Co-Director of Q-Step) Dr Kathryn Simpson (Politics/Q-Step) Dr Martin Hyde (Sociology/Q-Step) Dr Laurence Lessard-Philips (Sociology) Dr Maria Sobolweska (Politics)

The format of the event is as follows:

  • Roundtable/panel discussion followed by a Q&A session with students on inequality
  • Simulation/interactive activity on 'Who cares about inequality’
  • Workshop where students will work in small groups using the discussion at the beginning of the event as data to create a poster which they will present at the end of the day. The best poster by a student group on the topic of inequality wins a prize.
