Three masterpieces, leading to the first pinnacle of Shostakovich’s string output: No. 3 moves from playful energy, through extremes of violence and lament, to a questioning conclusion; No. 4 adds folk- and Klezmer-derived idioms to the mix; No. 5 combines symphonic scale and range with cryptic personal messages.
