Showcasing Diverse Commercialisation Opportunities in SHS - Lunchtime Seminar
Please join us for an in-person lunchtime seminar in the Jean McFarlane Building, hosted by Prof Dame Nicky Cullum DBE. The seminar will begin with a presentation from Sonia Nikolovski, Senior Project Manager at the Innovation Factory, who will present valuable insights on how the Innovation Factory assists researchers at the University of Manchester to maximise the impact of their research through commercialisation. Following this, Prof John Keady and Dr. Martin Fergie will discuss their recent experiences in bringing their research outputs to the commercial market via the University of Manchester spinout companies, Music in Mind Remote Ltd and Spotlight Pathology Ltd.
Music in Mind Remote Ltd
John Keady is Professor of Mental Health Nursing and Older People, a jointly funded post between the University of Manchester and Greater Manchester Mental Health NHS Foundation Trust. For the past 12 years, John has been involved in developing a research programme with Manchester Camerata and more specifically, their 20-week community and care home-based Music in Mind service for people living with dementia. Based on their work together, this presentation will outline some of the partnership milestones and the development of Music in Mind Remote Ltd, especially its integration into a successful UKRI ‘Design for Ageing’ grant (2022-2024). More information about Music in Mind and Music in Mind Remote Ltd can be found at: www.manchestercamerata.co.uk
Spotlight Pathology Ltd
Dr Martin Fergie, is a lecturer in Healthcare Sciences in the Division of Informatics, Imaging and Data Sciences, and has over 10 years’ experience developing AI algorithms for image analysis tasks, with a particular focus on using AI to develop biomarkers using advanced tissue imaging. Martin established the University of Manchester spinout company, Spotlight Pathology Ltd, in 2020, building on his research experience at UoM and his previous professional experience as Chief Technology Officer at Fixtuur (formerly called DigitalBridge), a company using computer vision and machine learning to turn static online stores into dynamic customer experiences. Spotlight Pathology is developing an AI platform to streamline the diagnosis of blood cancers, bringing tools to the market that will allow pathology departments to increase their diagnostic capacity, improve standardisation of diagnosis, and reduce the turnaround time for patients to receive their diagnosis and start treatment. Martin will reflect on his journey to create Spotlight Pathology, what Spotlight Pathology is currently developing, and how he manages his commercial role alongside his academic role at UoM. More information about Spotlight Pathology can be found at: www.spotlightpathology.com
SHS staff and PGR students are welcome to join. The event is free and takes place in-person in the Jean McFarlane Building. Please register to attend via Eventbrite.
