A talk by Professor Gary Younge on the US election
followed by a live Q&A chaired by Professor Angelia Wilson
Donald Trump's presidency was widely criticised for race-baiting
violating democratic norms. But America was a slave state for more
than 200 years, an apartheid state for a century and was only a non-racial
democracy for just over 50 years. Gary Younge asks how robust were those norms?
And to what extent were those norms undermined by its racial history?
Gary Younge joined Manchester University in 2020 from The Guardian,
where he was a columnist and editor-at-large. His most recent
work has focussed on youth violence, relating to shootings in the United
States, where he was The Guardian correspondent for 12 years, and
knife crime in Britain. Throughout his career both his journalism and
books have covered social movements in general (and the civil rights
movement in particular), inequality, race, immigration, identity and politics .
Angelia Wilson who will be chairing the Q&A, is a Professor of Politics
at the University of Manchester where she specialises in American Politics.
