The Humanitarian and Conflict Response Institute (HCRI) are proud to host the film screening of "Rising from Ashes". The screening and discussion has been scheduled to honour the 20th anniversary of the end of the Rwandan genocide, and will take place on Tuesday 2 December 2014.

"'Rising from Ashes' is a feature length documentary about two worlds colliding when cycling legend Jock Boyer moves to Rwanda, Africa to help a group of struggling genocide survivors pursue their dream of a national team... 'Rising from Ashes' was created with a common goal, to tell a story of redemption, hope, and second chances." (http://risingfromashesthemovie.com/about-film)

Following the screening there will be a discussion with Rony Cohen, Rising From Ashes Foundation, chaired by a HCRI Alumnus Sam Garbett. The discussion will include:

  • sport's role in post-conflict society, reconciliation, memory and identity
  • limitations, findings, and future potential that can be realised from the experiences described in Rising From Ashes

The session will be a film screening followed by a discussion with, and questions from, the intimate audience.

C1.18, Ellen Wilkinson Building

This is a HCRI Speaker Series event, open to students, staff and Alumni from The University of Manchester.

The Humanitarian and Conflict Response Institute (HCRI) Speaker Series is a regular student-focused forum that draws on the expertise of a range of academics, researchers and practitioners both within HCRI and more widely, covering a broad range of humanitarian-related issues and contexts. It is an opportunity to learn from and interact with scholars and practitioners in an informal and intimate environment in order to gain insights from people's own experiences.
