Join us for our next public talk to learn about the Chinese story of bamboo with Fang Zong.

Bamboo, as a model of sustainability, is deeply rooted in Chinese traditions of material application and cultural representation. This talk explores the dual identity of Chinese bamboo both as a vital ecological resource and a profound cultural symbol. Fang Zong, a multidisciplinary scholar, tells the Chinese story of bamboo through historical bamboo wares to modern innovation, scientific basics to artistic presentation, and natural environment to human spirit.

Tickets are free and everyone is welcome.

Manchester Confucius Institute public talks are free, informal and informative lectures aimed at anyone with an interest in Chinese culture and language.

Dr Fang ZONG, a former biomedical academic, is a public service museum professional, and independent Chinese culture consultant and curator. She has trained extensively in museum practice and Chinese arts at international institutions. Over her decade-long tenure at the Manchester Museum, she has published 44 articles and blog posts exploring museum collections and Chinese heritage. Her contributions to the Chinese collections and the development of the Lee Kai Hung Chinese Culture Gallery earned her the University of Manchester’s 2024 Exceptional Performance Award.
