The gender of the crossing : Movement and impermanence in emigrant Morocco
Focusing on the ceaseless movement between home and abroad of Moroccan migrant men, in this paper I trace how repetition of ‘the crossing’, the perilous Mediterranean passage from Africa into Europe, at once ensures and erodes social, physical, and gendered existence. Interrogating classic analyses of male migration as a definitive rite of passage from boyhood to manhood, I focus on the ‘work’ required of migrant men to remain men in time and space despite all odds, and frame gender as a particularly precarious achievement. Exploring how masculinity needs to be constantly reiterated and reinstated in emigrant Morocco, I argue that gender in this context may be considered not just as a determinant of movement between home and abroad, but also as its result.
