Ludwig van Beethoven, String Quartet No. 14, Op.131
César Franck, String Quartet in D Major
The Quatuor Danel presents two mature works concerned with exploring infinite unity within infinite diversity. To mark the bicentenary of the composer’s birth, the concert includes César Franck’s only quartet, which was completed in 1890. Gustav Mahler exclaimed that a symphony should ‘contain the whole world’, and Beethoven does just that with four instruments. Beethoven’s Op.131 was completed in profoundest phase of his creative output in 1826 and its sophisticated, interwoven, seven-movement structure takes us on a journey from complex to naïve, to quirky to sublime to terrifying.
