Abstract:
Climate change - more than in many other field of research we have to deal with a highly complicated, interdisciplinary and global problem. Alternative energy sources need to be further developed, reliable and holistic solutions to climate problems are sought, and serious pollution problems are still unresolved. Future-oriented basic and applied research must try to enable better understanding of these processes and counteract climate change to achieve the climate goals.
Climate change is also changing the design approach and the focus of urban planners and urban designer as well as architects. Since a few years, we can see an increasing public discussion about the quality and liveability of our urban environment. Only a few years are left for us to work parallel in adapting our urban environment and to find solutions for the global aspects of this problem. Vienna, often named as the most liveable city in the world, is intensively working on the improvement of its urban environment. My presentation will include actual proposals to transportation issues, recent design of public spaces and also different approaches in building design.
