This workshop aims to provide tools to improve presentation skills in academic settings. The combination of lecture and group activities will provide the material as well as the practise the participants on the one hand need to identify shortcomings in their own presentation skills and on the other hand to improve their performance for future academic conferences and presentation.

Content will cover topics such as material preparation, how to find a good introduction and conclusion for presentations, a better use of visuals, body language and how to prepare for Q&A.

The first half of the course consists of an interactive lecture capturing important aspects of the aforementioned topics. After a lunch break the participants will then engage in previously prepared mini-presentations and constructive feedback sessions. Presentations will be filmed so that participants can analyse their own presentation and performance as well individually after the workshop.

No previous experience is required for participation.

No reading prior to the workshop is recommended. However, further literature on specific aspects will be presented throughout the workshop and on the handout materials. Participants are asked to prepare a very short presentation (max. 3 min) on a topic of their choice, aimed at a non-specialist audience. In the practical part of the workshop participants will present their material including a Q&A period and group feedback session.

This workshop is presented by Tina Hannemann. Tina is a Research Associate at the Cathie Marsh Institute for Social Research, University of Manchester. She works on two projects associated with the Centre on Dynamics of Ethnicity and the National Centre for Research Methods. Tina has a Master’s degree in Demography from University Rostock in Germany and received a PhD in Economic History from Lund University in Sweden.

Booking is necessary via https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/academic-presentation-skills-tickets-30551188427

This workshop also runs on 6 April 2017.
