A Place in the City, by Dr Gabriel Silvestre, from Newcastle University's School of Architecture, Planning and Landscape, features communities in Latin America facing displacement, segregation, and gender inequality. The film captures how ordinary people are reshaping their neighbourhoods—fighting not just for rights, but for the power to design more inclusive urban futures. Through powerful stories from Santiago de Chile, Rosario (Argentina), and Belo Horizonte (Brazil), the film weaves together compelling commentary with archival and original footage. It is both a tribute to collective action and a call to imagine cities differently.
Gabriel Silvestre is Senior Lecturer in Urban Planning and Degree Programme Director MSc Urban Planning at Newcastle University. He joined the school in 2021 having previously taught at University of Sheffield, University College London and University of Westminster.
His interdisciplinary background reflects his interests at the interface of urban studies and policy analysis. He has a BA in Management Studies (Mackenzie University), a MA in Tourism Management (University of Westminster) and a PhD in Planning Studies (Bartlett School of Planning, UCL). He also has experience working in the public sector for organisations such as Visit Britain and the City of London Corporation.
At APL he is responsible for the MSc Urban Planning programme, a deputy director for internationalisation and a member of the Equality, Diversity and Inclusion committee. Elsewhere, he is a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy, a founding member of the Latin American Geographies Research Group (Royal Geographical Society), and executive editor of the journal International Planning Studies.
