Abstract
Black, Asian & Minority Ethnic (BAME) Chief Executives Officers (CEOs) represent less than 2% of all Public Sector CEOs across the 696 Health and Local Government organisations in the UK. Through an appreciatively led study of a rare group of senior gatekeepers who have recruited a BAME CEO, we learn what are the key determinants to changing the current reality to reflect a level of BAME CEOs that mirror the UK working age population of BAME at 14%.
Why should this matter? Well let’s spend some time together imagining a Covid-19 world where public sector CEOs reflected the broad ethnicity of the UK population - would the headlines regarding the outcomes for BAME communities and staff be different?
Bio
Dr Owen Williams OBE has been the Chief Executive of Calderdale and Huddersfield NHS Foundation Trust for the last 8 years having consecutively served as the CEO of Rossendale District and Calderdale Metropolitan Borough Councils. Earlier this year (2020) he was granted the degree of Doctor of Business Administration by the University of Huddersfield following the successful completion of his thesis. Prior to working in the public sector, he worked in commercial business including his first employment at the Yorkshire Building Society. He is passionate about reducing health inequality and ensuring that no communities - regardless of race, colour or creed - get left behind.
