Sarah Wright's The Child in Spanish Cinema (2013) explores the child on screen as a potent motif for the loss of historical memory in Spain’s religious films, musicals, 'art-house horror', science fiction, social realism, and fantasy. The first full-length treatment of this topic, the book has been received enthusiastically by scholars and has ignited a broader debate on the role of the child in Spanish culture. This seminar offers two responses to Wright’s work. Mary Farrelly’s paper will address Wright’s ideas about the child of the cine religioso in relation to José María Elorrieta’s 1962 Canción de cuna, and José Luis Garci’s 1994 adaptation. Mark Goodwin will follow Wright's third chapter by discussing the issues surrounding teaching child-centred Spanish films to teenagers.
