Commissioning and place-based health and care: perspectives from national leaders and policymakers.
The concept of "place" within health and care has been long-standing in the English NHS in 1) acting as a unit for the planning and delivery of health and care and 2) determining the relationship between local health and care partners and the communities they serve. The recent publication of the government’s integration white paper further reinforced the primacy of place as the footprint for integration of health and care and joint decision-making closer to local communities, with a move towards a single “place-based” leader responsible for health and care delivery and outcomes. For the NHS, this is significant departure from the current regime of organisational-based accountability and heavily centralised regulation. In this presentation, Melissa will present her findings to date from semi-structured interviews with national health and care leaders on the current policy and legislative changes, how these are being implemented, and what the next steps might look like in the organisation of place-based health and care.
