The elusive magnetic monopole is arguably the most important particle that has yet to be discovered. We shall follow the search for the monopole from its Victorian beginnings until today and discuss how we can continue into the future.
We shall see that this quest describes a golden thread that runs through fundamental physics from its classical beginnings, through its quantum conception, to the brave new world of Grand Unified Theory and Theories of Everything. Nevertheless, I shall consider this adventure from an experimentalist's point of view.
