In recent years, Translation Studies has witnessed a growing interest in what some would call “industry studies”. In different quarters, certain scholars and industry observers refer to the “language industry” (or “language services industry”) and others to the “translation industry”. In this seminar, we first explore the emergence of this field from its origins in Translator Studies and sociological inquiries into translation, before unpicking the meanings and identities of these names, their connotations, and the practices and statuses that they signify. Exploring the wide range of actors and services involved in the translation industry, we can appreciate the diversity and strength of this vital sector in all its dimensions and forms. However, with strength and diversity also comes challenges. Drawing on research conducted over the last year as part of the Chasing Status project, the presentation will briefly discuss some of the key issues facing professionals on the ground today, such as automation, a changing market, and working conditions. The seminar closes with an invitation to reflect on ways to empower translators, confront challenges, and carve out a unique path in and add value to services an industry in flux.
