One quarter of all adults and three quarters of those 65 and older live with multiple chronic conditions. These patients must attend to not only the symptoms of their illness but also the work transferred to them by the healthcare system to manage their illness.
As patients accumulate conditions, they also accumulate patient work, putting them at risk for experiencing treatment burden if their capacity to meet the demand is inadequate. Minimally Disruptive Medicine is an approach to care that seeks to recognize and address workload-capacity imbalance in clinical care in the pursuit of patient goals.
Dr. Kasey Boehmer, director of the Minimally Disruptive Medicine program at the Mayo Clinic will detail the problems of patients living with multiple chronic conditions and describe the ways in which research in Minimally Disruptive Medicine are seeking to address those issues.
