This presentation traces the presence of fictional avant-garde artists in Latin American literary works from the 1970s onwards, aiming to redefine the notion of a Latin American avant-garde itself. In this vein, imagined avant-gardes are understood as literary artifacts that, from their distinctive fictional status, interrogate the position of arts and writers amidst specific socio-historical coordinates. By adopting Jon Beasley-Murray’s theoretical framework of posthegemony, three specific instances of fictional avant-gardes will be addressed. Julio Cortázar’s Libro de Manuel (1973), Roberto Bolaño’s Los detectives salvajes (1998) and Mónica Ojeda's La desfiguración Silva (2015) fictionalize avant-gardes in order to reclaim an immanent outlook on the ever-present question of linking arts and politics.
