From invention to innovation: The role of corporate inventors in bringing their technology to the market
Markus Simeth, Associate Professor at the Department of Strategy and Innovation (SI) at Copenhagen Business School, will discuss the role of corporate inventors in driving the commercialization of new technologies.
Inventors are universally considered as the key resource in the generation of new technologies in R&D performing companies. However, their influence on the subsequent development and commercialization of their inventions remains relatively unexplored. This paper examines the impact of corporate inventors on downstream technology commercialization. By using information on premature inventor deaths, we analyze how inventors influence their inventions’ prospects of achieving a commercialization stage. Our empirical analysis suggests that the participation of corporate inventors has a positive impact on the process of bringing technologies to the market. The effect is particularly pronounced for (a) technologies that are closer to the scientific knowledge frontier and thus more distant to the product market, and (b) technologies in domains with higher uncertainty on the value of inventions, where the necessary steps to implement the invention are less predictable. These findings suggest that inventors accumulate relevant tacit knowledge during the knowledge generation phase that is useful for bringing the invention to the market.
