Join us for an informal artist-led event bringing together arts and cultural institutions, academics, policy makers and artists, to work towards better inclusion of refugee artists.
Refugee artists have potential to be catalysts for innovation in arts and culture in Britain yet research suggests that the arts and cultural sector has poor inclusion of refugee artists and that structures and systems continue to stereotype, compartmentalise and exclude them, resulting in their cultural production existing at the margins.
The event is curated by Stella Barnes, Simon Industrial Fellow at The University of Manchester and a focus group of artists. Since leaving her role as Creative Director at Community Arts North West in July 2023, Stella Barnes has been undertaking a research fellowship with The University of Manchester. Through the Fellowship and especially through this event, we intend to create positive dialogue between artists and arts institutions, academics and policy makers; thereby encouraging systems change in the arts and culture sector that leads to better inclusion of refugee artists.
This event is a partnership between the School of Arts Languages and Cultures at The University of Manchester, Creative Manchester and Community Arts North West and had been co-created by artists with lived experience who are part of Community Arts North West's network. It is closely linked with PhD research project 'Listening to the Voices of Refugee Artists.' being carried out by Ambrose Musiyiwa in the Department of Drama and Film.
