The next Manchester Infection Seminar will be by Jens Madsen, University College London, who will be presenting a talk entitled' Surfactant Protein D – the inflammation light switch in the airways'.
The talk will be Wednesday 28th February at 11:00. The seminar will be held in the Michael Smith Lecture Theatre and online via Zoom (https://zoom.us/j/99620144890).
Abstract: Surfactant Protein D – from bench to bedside, does size matter?
Surfactant Protein D (SP-D) is part of the lining fluid (surfactant) of the lung and is an important part of the innate immune system, keeping the airways in a relatively inflammation-free state. The protein has both anti-inflammatory and anti-infectious properties and is effective against certain viruses, bacteria, fugus and parasites. A recombinant fragment of human SP-D has been developed, which has many of the same functions as the native full-length protein. This recombinant fragment is now being tested in a safety phase I trial in preterm babies and this session will provide an overview of the development of this fragment from early beginnings to the clinical trial.
