This first Sarah Fielden seminar marks the launch of MIE and also Professor Lupton’s inaugural professorial lecture. Drawing on data from the UK and Manchester, she will explore contemporary relationships between poverty, inequality and education, and the ways they are reflected (or not) in current English education policy. She will argue that economic inequality and labour market dynamics, and their particular configurations and consequences in different cities, deserve a much more prominent part in education research, development and policy-making. Marking the launch of MIE, she will sketch some of the ways in which the Institute, School, University and city are placed to offer a distinctive ‘Manchester perspective’ on these debates.
