Virinder S. Kalra book launch featuring a musical performance by Raj Veer.
Drawing on examples from spiritual music of North West India, this talk will illustrate some the themes from the book Sacred and Secular Musics: A Postcolonial Approach. Punjab in North India and Pakistan is home to distinct musical genres in which the boundaries between the sacred and secular blend. By looking at the Rababi music tradition the cultural syncretism that marks the music of South Asia comes to life.
