The origin of originality in science

Abstract:

As originality is the engine of scientific advancement, the origin of originality is of interest in the studies of science. In particular, we investigate how scientists learn to produce original knowledge, focusing on their early career experiences (PhD and postdoc). We investigated scientists' early-career experiences and followed their careers for 10-20 years, finding a few results. First, "original" scientists tend to be raised by "original" supervisors. Second, this is mediated by the transfer of research skills and strategies conducive to originality. Third, the transfer of originality is facilitated by training environment where young scientists are allowed autonomy and room for exploration. Fourth, such training environment often results in inefficiency and failure, which nonetheless seem to be a source of learning for originality.
