Can’t see the wood for the trees? Exploring the future of forests for people and planet.

If we’re serious about tacking the climate crisis, while also reducing poverty, then restoring forests around the world is an urgent task. Forests host most of the biodiversity on land, are the world’s largest carbon stores, and contribute directly to the lives of billions of people, especially in tropical countries. But with the effectiveness of large tree planting and carbon offsetting schemes increasingly being questioned, are we heading in the right direction?

Join us for a late event looking at the state of the world’s forests, including:

• A talk by award winning photographer Kieran Dodds, whose Hierotopia series explores the green ‘church forests’, close to the source of the Blue Nile in Ethiopia.

• A panel debate from leading experts and practitioners in the field on preserving and extending our forests at the scale needed to address the environmental crisis including:

o Adithya Pradeep, founder of Jeev, which is building tools to empower project developers and local stewards to launch equitable nature restoration projects. o Felipe Melo, Associate Professor in Ecological Restoration at Nottingham Trent University. o Polyanna da Conceição Bispo, Lecturer in Physical Geography at the University of Manchester. o Rose Pritchard, Presidential Fellow in Socio-Environmental Systems at the University of Manchester

• The official launch of the Sustainable Forest Transitions research project with Johan Oldekop from the Global Development Institute.
