Many critiques of social media target their model of the social as being ideological in constructing a communal platform devoid of collectivity and antagonism, a pacified techno-sociality that is compatible with neoliberal capitalism. The paper looks at the social enacted by social media platforms. It examines it as a transcoding of the diagram of social networking when it becomes incorporated in a machine of social computation embedded in a digital communication infrastructure. What is the relation between the diagram of social network analysis and the “hyper-social” as a technical milieu of circulation that redefines the early 21st century concept of the social?
Tiziana Terranova is Associate Professor in New Media and Cultural Studies at the University of Naples L'Orientale. She is the author of Network Culture: Politics for the Information Age (Pluto Press, 2004) and the forthcoming Hypersocial: digital media and social networking (University of Minnesota Press) and numerous essays on the social and cultural politics of digital media.
