Who is it for: | University staff, Current University students |
Speaker: | Dr Lionel Clarke |
|
A cross-Faculty, quarterly PhD & Post-Doc seminar series open to anyone interested in the fields of Industrial Biotechnology (IB) and Synthetic Biology (SynBio). The sessions consist of a series of short talks delivered by postdocs and Ph.D. students from within the University and a guest speaker.
We are pleased to have Dr Lionel Clarke as our guest speaker in this first session. Lionel is at the forefront of steering and developing SynBio for IB applications and has extensive knowledge and experience with applied biotechnology. Among other roles he is the Director of "Bio-Environmental Solutions" consulting on low-capex low-carbon energy and climate mitigation solutions, and co-Chairman of the UK Synthetic Biology Leadership Council (SBLC). Lionel is also a Honorary Chair in FLS, a Visiting Professor in the Department of Bioengineering at Imperial College, London, and an EPSRC Engineering Strategic Advisory Team Member.
Dr Clarke's talk abstract:
"Although synthetic biology may be considered an emerging technology, its perceived potential to deliver valuable benefits is already generating keen interest to develop commercially-viable applications. The UK Synthetic Biology Roadmap sets out a vision for the sector, and provides a framework within which to develop its potential. In this presentation, I shall explore the relationship between innovation and commercialization, and outline the need to take an integrated and holistic approach if anticipated benefits are to be effectively realized.
