Overview: This workshop is intended to introduce the context and practice of PhD supervision at Manchester. It is suitable for those with little or no previous supervisory experience (those with up to around one year’s experience).
We will start by reflecting on the pedagogy of PhD supervision. Then, the session will cover different aspects of managing the PhD ‘journey’ which, depending on issues flagged up in advance by participants, may cover topics such as: key milestones; handling supervisor relationships; supporting welfare; completion management; the viva and acting as an examiner. The session will consist of inputs from experienced supervisors alongside interactive discussion and small group exercises, focusing on maximising the effectiveness of participants’ own practice and preparing for some of the challenges they may face. Participants will be encouraged to reflect on and share their own experiences of PhD supervision, and we will consider the changing nature of the humanities/social science doctorate.
