The School of Social Sciences and Department of Law are delighted to host the 2026 Annual Harry Street Lecture delivered by an alumnus of our school and leading figure in the legal and political sphere.

Full details on the distinguished speaker will be revealed soon, but previous Harry Street Lectures have featured renowned judges and policy makers, so this year’s speaker promises to be equally insightful and thought-provoking.

The Harry Street Lecture has run every year (with few exceptions) since 1985 and has been given by an impressive roll call of leading figures from the worlds of law and politics. Harry Street, a well-known British jurist and legal scholar, spent much of his time at the University of Manchester where he developed a keen interest in civil liberties and the law of torts. This lecture series aims to highlight the vast work of those in the legal and political fields and invites people to engage with something new.

Event Details:

The lecture will be delivered as a hybrid event. Those attending online will be sent a separate online link closer to the event. Online attendees will be able to submit questions via the chat function, which will be read to the speaker by a member of staff during the Q&A.

The lecture will run for approximately 45 minutes, followed by a Q&A session, and will conclude with an hour networking reception in the North Entrance foyer for in-person attendees starting at 6.30pm. The foyer can be accessed via the South Entrance for those needing an accessible entrance, a team member will escort you from the lecture theatre to the foyer for ease.

Important Access Information:

Step-free access to the lecture theatre is by arrangement with the building warden and is only accessible via this external entrance. Please ensure you contact soss.externalrelations@manchester.ac.uk if you require accessible access.
