Social Anthropology Seminar
Monday, 8th of October 2018
Dr Victor Sacha Cova
Anthropology Aarhus University Denmark
Nicole, Queen of Macas
This talk locates the trajectory of Wilo/Nicola Shacay, an indigenous transgender activist, among transformations of economic and political life at the settler colonial frontier in the Ecuadorian Amazon over the past 40 years. Coming from a traditional Shuar family, Wilo is now a beauty advisor for beauty pageants and the organiser of sexual rights workshops, LGBT beauty pageants, and was for a time the leader of an LGBT performance group. The talk focuses particularly on the effects of wage-labour on sex and gender and interprets Wilo's activism as primarily oriented toward improving the working conditions of LGBT people in the Morona Santiago Province. As a result this talk critically revisits the literature on the performance of gender from the perspective of Queer Marxism and Amazonian ethnography.
