"One million PhDs”: Epistemic politics and doctoral education in Africa
In this paper I address the epistemic consequences of framing doctoral training as a productivity challenge. Amidst claims that Africa ‘needs’ another million PhDs, contemporary doctoral funding initiatives sustain colonial academic networks and mobility regimes. Asymmetric transnational collaborations channel funding and resources to a small research elite. The policy discourse of research ‘capacity building’ effaces the precarity of academic work and doctoral study in many universities, and contrasts with loud calls to decolonize and ‘transform’ African higher education. I use ethnographic portraiture to explore the implications of these epistemic bifurcations, and the value(s) of an anthropology of Higher Education.
