WYC Speaks: In Black and White

Thursday 26 October, 6-8pm, free

Join the Whitworth Young Contemporaries (WYC) for an evening of discussion, poetry and workshops to celebrate Black History Month. Chaired by Pat Farrell, the panel will discuss race, diversity and issues growing up in Manchester today. The event will kick off with a set from poet Isaiah Hull. Panel members will include: Kemoy Walker, Youth Worker and Youth Ambassador in Moss Side Philipa from WYC, a representative of the Manchester Youth Council and a curator from The Whitworth.

6pm: Poetry from Isaiah Hull

6:30-7:30pm: Panel Discussion

7:30- 9pm: Workshops

This event coincides with our exhibition Steve McQueen: Ashes. Ashes (2002-2015), a double video projection, tells the story of a young Caribbean man known by this name. On one screen we see a film portrait of him, young and handsome, standing on the prow of a boat. The other side of this screen shows the building of Ashes' tomb after he has been murdered by drug dealers on the island. Life, death, despair and hope are presented by McQueen in this perfectly crafted elegy. Drinks are available in the Whitworth Cafe from a paid bar.
