Museums in the UK and globally are engaging with the question of repatriation more than ever before but what does it take for institutions to commit to the unconditional return of cultural heritage items and ancestral human remains to originating communities and traditional owners? Stephen Welsh will draw on his professional experience of participating in several repatriation cases, including the recent unconditional return of 43 secret sacred and ceremonial objects to Australia's First Nations peoples from Manchester Museum, and consider what fundamental changes need to happen to embed this crucial work.
About the speaker:
Stephen Welsh is an independent curator and consultant with over 15 years of working in museums. He was the Curator of Living Cultures, The University of Manchester, from 2007. He was responsible for ensuring access to a collection of over 18,000 ethnographic objects from Africa, America, Asia and Oceania. Until recently he was also Deputy Head of Collections and leading the development of Manchester Museum’s forthcoming South Asia Gallery in partnership with Manchester’s South Asian communities and the British Museum. Previously he was Project Curator at the International Slavery Museum, National Museum Liverpool, from 2005 to 2007.
