Museums in the UK and globally are engaging with the question of repatriation more than ever before but what does it take for institutions to commit to the unconditional return of cultural heritage items and ancestral human remains to originating communities and traditional owners? Stephen Welsh will draw on his professional experience of participating in several repatriation cases, including the recent unconditional return of 43 secret sacred and ceremonial objects to Australia's First Nations peoples from Manchester Museum, and consider what fundamental changes need to happen to embed this crucial work.
