Unfortunately, the Arthur Lewis lecture has been postponed and will no longer be held on the 26 February. We will be in touch with further details of a new date in due course which will be advertised via a new event page.

We apologise for any inconvenience this may cause.

The Arthur Lewis Lecture 2020, will be delivered by Sir Timothy John Besley (Tim) CBE FBA, School Professor of Economics and Political Science and Sir W. Arthur Lewis Professor of Development Economics at the London School of Economics

It is now widely appreciated that an effective state is needed to support growth and development. This includes institutions which support policy making and strong cultural norms. This lecture, entitled “State Fragility, Growth and Development”, will discuss how recent developments in political economy are useful for addressing the practical challenges faced by governments and international agencies in the face of weak legitimacy, a poorly developed private economy, low levels of state capacity and/or fractured societies. It will discuss the prospects for fresh approaches to policy-making.

Tim Besley's research spans public economics, development economics and political economy. He is a past President of the Econometric Society and the International Economic Association. He is also a Fellow of the British Academy and a foreign honorary member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. Beyond his academic work, he has been a member of the Bank of England Monetary Policy Committee and is a current member of the National Infrastructure Commission as well as giving advice to a number of international organizations. In 2018, he was knighted for services to economics and public policy.

Following the lecture, there will be a short drinks reception in University Place
