"The Business of Being Kind in Russia"
In Russia over the past ten years compassion has become not just a fashionable social trend but a lucrative commercial enterprise. Charities, development organizations, and informal networks of private citizens both compete and cooperate with private businesses and state agencies to promote benevolence as a civic virtue that simultaneously supports state, society, and market. Cross-fertilization between social movement activists and business entrepreneurs produces fruitful spaces for rethinking the simultaneously emotional and utilitarian dimensions of assistance exchanges and for understanding the role of affect in Russia’s new market economy.
