Title: Rationality problems, degenerations of the diagonal, and prelog Chow rings
Abstract: The degeneration method due to Voisin-Merkurjev-Colliot-Thelene-Pirutka-Totaro-Schreieder et al. has led to spectacular advances on rationality questions recently, but a number of deep problems, such as the question of stable rationality for certain classes of (very general) hypersurfaces of small degree in projective space, e.g. cubic hypersurfaces, remain open. The applicability and scope of the degeneration method could be greatly improved if one could make use of degenerations with more badly singular central fibres. We will report on work in progress (joint with Michel van Garrel and Hans-Christian von Bothmer) that seeks to accomplish this using some techniques inspired by log geometry and the Gross-Siebert programme.
