Join us on Thursday 22nd May at 1pm on our visit to the ‘Women in Revolt! Art and Activism in the UK 1970-1990’ exhibition at the Whitworth Gallery to explore the portrayal of social reproduction and women’s work. The event is supported by the Political Economy Centre at the University of Manchester.
The exhibition displays art from the Wages for Housework movement and a wealth of archival material from feminist activist groups organising around un- and under- paid work. Notable pieces are posters by See Red Women’s Workshop, art from Stella Dadzie (author of The Heart of the Race: Black Women’s Lives in Britain) and collages from Hackney’s Market Nursery, a product of grassroots mothers’ activism in the 70s.
We’ll look around the exhibition together, reflecting on key pieces which speak to themes of social reproduction. We’ll then head outside to the park (weather depending) or to the gallery Café to reflect on what we’ve seen.
Provisional themes for discussion:
- The portrayal of social reproduction and women’s work in the exhibition: insights, silences, the archive
- Intersections of art and social reproduction: maintenance art and the reproduction of the gallery
We’ll meet on the steps outside the gallery at 1pm.
